Chess by Stefan Zweig

FEBRUARY: Chess by Stefan Zweig

Not to Disturb by Muriel Spark

JANUARY: Not to Disturb by Muriel Spark

this felt like reading a play script without the added benefits of live theater... the concept was intriguing – the idea of prophesised scandal, the servants’ point of view – but i was mostly bored or confused throughout. i did enjoy some lines of dialogue though, especially from heloise’s character.

2025

OCTOBER 2025: The Collector by John Fowles

dnfed this pretty quickly... i'm in a bit of a reading slump so trying to read a genre that is a out of my comfort zone did not really help :(

SEPTEMBER 2025: Água Viva by Clarice Lispector

i will finish this!! just need my braincells to collaborate

AUGUST 2025: Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor

i had never heard of elizabeth taylor before this book was chosen for the club but i’m glad i picked it up! i always enjoy reading about mundane microcosmos, though this one was a bit gloomier than my usual reads. the mood of the story shifts between playfulness and sadness, some feelings of loneliness and vulnerability rang true even at my ripe old age of 26… by the end i got a bit bored with mr osmond’s antics, but the last few pages were a (good) punch in the gut.

wuthering heights

JULY 2025: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

did not enjoy this very much… i can appreciate its innovative structure and overarching themes but overall i could not get into it (possibly bc i also had to study it in high school) sigh…
